Groove Eddy, formerly known as Eddie Cole, is
a roots folk artist from the Dandenong ranges outside of Melbourne,
Australia. He is an accomplished singer and guitarist and prolific
songwriter.
2010 sees him releasing Groove Eddy's first album: 'Overload'.
'Overload' brings Eddy's guitar playing and singing to the fore with
his backing band of Nigel Picknell on drums, bassist Joel Hulme,
vocalist Amber Rose and violinist/vocalist Judy Hamilton.
His story goes back over twenty years to when he left school heavily
infected with the music bug. He had some skill on the guitar and could
hold a tune. He talked his way into his best friend's band. They had
lofty ambitions, played some gigs, but soon imploded.
He became a drifting hippy traveller. Dead-end jobs, busking, open mics
and coffee shops. Eventually he got enough money to record a good
quality demo and send it to England. Two major record companies made
overtures but it wasn't his time and nothing happened.
Eddie hit the road in Australia. In the wilderness south of Perth, he
witnessed the night sky on fire from the Southern Aurora and in his
ignorance feared someone had dropped the bomb! Shortly after this
experience, he attended a Revival meeting and got the fire of the Holy
Ghost.
Back home with a wife and baby, he lived in a shack and abandoned his
musical ambitions. With no formal qualifications and no career
prospects Eddie worked in a hospital collecting the rubbish and dirty
linen. Time passed and he put together a couple of low budget gospel
albums full of passionate intensity. A few hundred of each title sold
through his pentecostal church. People loved this music.
Eventually, as he began teaching others to play, Eddie decided it was
time to make an album aimed at the world beyond the church. The project
was called "I know what's going on". Some people took notice. The
"Mellow" EP followed. The boy could play and slowly people were
beginning to listen. Airplay around Australia on the ABC and community
radio followed.
2008 saw the release of a full album, "It's the apocalypse, baby".
Evoking strains of Roberta Flack's 'First take ' and 'Van Morrison's
'Astral weeks' it featured jazz inflected rhythms, double bass, strings
and gorgeous guitar playing. It also has a distinctly Australian
flavour - check out 'Rusty shack'.
2009 saw Eddie revisit his gospel roots with a live recording of a
benefit concert called "Full on Gospel".
